Wyman Anderson was born on June 2, 1920, in Cashton, Wisconsin. He enlisted in the Aviation Cadet Program of the U.S. Army Air Forces on September 27, 1941, and was commissioned a 2d Lt and awarded his pilot wings on April 29, 1942. After completing fighter training, he flew P-40 Warhawks with the 87th Fighter Squadron of the 79th Fighter Group in North Africa, where he was credited with the destruction of 6 enemy aircraft in aerial combat between April and June 1943. Lt Anderson returned to the U.S. in September 1943, and then completed gunnery training before serving a tour in the Pacific Theater. After the war, Anderson served with Headquarters U.S. Air Force in the Pentagon from September 1947 to June 1949, followed by service with the 94th Fighter Squadron at March AFB, California, from June 1949 to February 1951. He was an exchange pilot with the U.S. Navy, where he served with CVG-5 and VF-52 at San Diego, California, from February 1951 to March 1952, and then served with the 93rd Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico, from March to July 1952. He served with the 34th Air Division, also at Kirtland AFB, from July 1952 to February 1953, and then with the 29th Air Division at Great Falls AFB, Montana, from February to December 1953. Maj Anderson attended Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, from December 1953 to July 1954, and then served as Operations Officer for the 4704th Air Defense Wing at McChord AFB, Washington, until October 1954. His next assignment was as Executive Officer for the 317th Fighter Interceptor Squadron and then the 64th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, also at McChord AFB, from October 1954 to April 1959. Col Anderson was Operations Officer and then Commander of the 327th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Thule AB, Greenland, from April 1959 to April 1960, followed by service as Operations Officer and then Commander of the 64th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Paine Field, Washington, from April 1960 to August 1962. He was Commander of the 4781st Combat Crew Training Squadron at Perrin AFB, Texas, from September 1962 to May 1965, and then served on the staff of Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe at Lindsey AS, West Germany, from May 1965 to July 1968. His final assignment was as Operations Officer with the 52nd Fighter Wing at Suffolk County AFB, New York, from July 1968 until his retirement from the Air Force on May 31, 1969. Wyman Anderson died on January 9, 2007, and was buried at the Cedarlawn Memorial Park in Sherman, Texas.
