Charles Hauver was born on February 23, 1923, in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve on July 6, 1942, and entered the Aviation Cadet Program of the U.S. Army Air Forces on January 7, 1943. Hauver was commissioned a 2d Lt and awarded his pilot wings on November 3, 1943, and after completing P-51 Mustang training, he was assigned to the 354th Fighter Squadron of the 355th Fighter Group in England in July 1944. Lt Hauver was credited with the destruction of 5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat plus 1 damaged before returning to the U.S. in January 1945. He left active duty and entered the Air Force Reserve on December 13, 1946, and returned to active duty on November 18, 1947. Capt Hauver was assigned to the 96th Fighter Squadron at Grenier Field, New Hampshire, from November 1947 to October 1948, and then with the 44th Fighter Squadron of the 18th Fighter Group in Japan, from October 1948 to July 1951. During this time he flew combat missions in the opening days of the Korean War, and flew out of South Korea from July 1950 until his return to the U.S. in July 1951. Capt Hauver then served as an interceptor pilot with Air Defense Command from July 1951 to February 1953, and bases in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, before attending Test Pilot School and serving at Edwards AFB, California, from February 1953 to September 1956. He then received an Air Force Institute of Technology assignment to the University of Chicago to complete a graduate degree before serving as a Production Officer with Air Material Command from July 1958 until his retirement on January 31, 1963. During this last assignment, Maj Hauver served as a Production and Quality Control Officer at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio, at Clark AB, the Philippines, and at the Hughes Aircraft Company in Culver City, California.
