John McCain was born on January 17, 1911, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned an Ensign in June 1931, and served aboard the battleship USS Oklahoma (BB-37) in the Pacific for his first assignment. McCain next completed submarine school and served aboard the submarines S-45 and R-13 before serving as an instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1938 to 1940. He then served aboard the submarine USS Skipjack (SS-184) until April 1941, when he was given command of the submarine O-8 at the Submarine School. His next assignment was as commander of the submarine USS Gunnel (SS-253) from May 1942 to October 1944, during which time he participated in the North Africa invasion and then in actions in the Pacific Theater. He returned to the States from July to October 1944, and then took command of the submarine USS Dentuda (SS-335), serving on her until the end of the war. After the war, McCain served as Director of Records to the Bureau of Naval Personnel until 1949, and then commanded Submarine Division 71 in the Pacific until February 1950, when he became Executive Officer of the heavy cruiser USS Saint Paul (CA-73). He served in this position until November 1950, and during this time participated in the opening days of the Korean War. McCain's next assignment was as Director of Undersea Warfare Research and Development from December 1950 to 1953, and then commander of Submarine Squadron 6 in the Atlantic from 1953 to 1954. He then commanded the attack transport USS Monrovia (AP-64) from 1954 to 1955, followed by service as the director of the Progress Analysis Group from 1955 to 1957. He was commander of the heavy cruiser USS Albany (CA-123) from 1957 to 1958, and then was promoted to Rear Admiral and served at the Pentagon from 1958 to 1960. He commanded Amphibious Group 2 and Amphibious Training from 1960 to 1962, and then served as Chief of Naval Information from 1962 to 1963. His next assignment was as commander of Amphibious Forces Atlantic Fleet from 1963 to 1965, and he led Task Force 124 during the invasion of the Dominican Republic in April 1965. ADM McCain then served as vice chairman of delegation to the United Nations Military Staff Committee, Commander Eastern Sea Frontier, and Commander Atlantic Reserve Fleet before becoming Commander-in-Chief of U.S. Naval Forces Europe in May 1967. He then served as Commander-in-Chief of U.S. Pacific Command, where he served from April 1968 to September 1972. His final assignment was as special assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations from September 1972 until his retirement from the Navy on November 1, 1972. ADM McCain died on March 22, 1981, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. His father was ADM John S. McCain, Sr., and his son is Senator John S. McCain, III.
