Harold Keller was born on August 3, 1921, in Brooklyn, Iowa. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at Des Moines, Iowa, on January 6, 1942, and completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California, in February 1942. Pvt Keller next attended Lineman School at San Diego from February to April 1942, followed by service as a Lineman with Company E, 2nd Marine Raider Battalion at Camp Elliott, California, from April to May 1942. He deployed with his unit to Camp Beaumont on Oahu, Hawaii, in May 1942, and he transferred to Company C of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion and served at Midway Island from May to September 1942. He was at Midway during the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Keller deployed with his unit from Midway in September 1942 to Camp Gung Ho on Espiritu Santo, and then participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal from November to December 1942. He returned with his unit to Camp Gung Ho in December 1942, and Company C of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion became Company F in April 1943. The 2nd Marine Raider Battalion became the 2nd Marine Raider Regiment in September 1943, and PFC Keller then participated in combat with his unit at Bougainville in November 1943 where he was wounded in action on November 8. He was then evacuated back to the United States, and was assigned to Camp Elliott, California, from February to March 1944. He joined Company E, 2nd Battalion, 28th Marine Regiment of the 5th Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, California, in March 1944, and deployed with his unit to Camp Tarawa, Hawaii, in September 1944. Corporal Keller next deployed with his unit to Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands in February 1945, and then to Iwo Jima, landing on the first day of the Battle of Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. One February 23, 1945, during the Battle of Iwo Jima, Cpl Keller participated in both the 1st and 2nd American Flag raising missions on top of Mount Suribachi. He left Iwo Jima with his unit in late March 1945, and returned to Hawaii in April 1945. Cpl Keller then returned to the United States, and was assigned to the Screening Detachment at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, for officer training in May 1945. He was selected for officer training in June 1945, and began Officer Training School in July 1945. He had completed nearly 2 months of training when World War II ended, and he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps on September 19, 1945. After the war, Keller served with the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department in Brooklyn, Iowa, for 30 years and eventually became the Fire Chief. He died on March 13, 1979, and was buried at Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery in Brooklyn, Iowa.
