Ted Freeman was born on February 18, 1930, in Haverford, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Lewes, Delaware. He earned his private pilot's license in 1946, at age 16, and his commercial pilot's license in 1948. After attending the University of Delaware at Newark from 1948 to 1949, Freeman entered the U.S. Naval Academy on June 17, 1949. He graduated and was commissioned a 2d Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force on June 2, 1953, and he then attended Primary Pilot Training with the 3303rd Flying Training Squadron at Hondo AB, Texas, from June 1953 to March 1954. Lt Freeman attended Basic Pilot Training with the 3550th Student Squadron at Bryan AFB, Texas, from April 1954 until he was awarded his pilot wings on August 17, 1954. He next attended F-86 Sabre upgrade training with the 3595th Flying Training Group at Nellis AFB, Nevada, from September to December 1954, followed by service as an F-86F pilot and Maintenance Officer with the 67th Fighter-Bomber Squadron of the 18th Fighter-Bomber Group at Kadena AB, Okinawa, from March 1955 to June 1957. Lt Freeman served as an F-100 Super Sabre pilot and Maintenance Officer with the 1st Fighter-Day Squadron at George AFB, California, from August 1957 to May 1958, and then as Assistant Mobility Officer with the 413th Fighter-Day Wing at George AFB from May to June 1958. His next assignment was as an F-100 pilot with the 21st Fighter-Day Squadron at George AFB from June to September 1958, followed by an Air Force Institute of Technology assignment for Graduate School to complete his Master's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor from September 1958 to February 1960. Capt Freeman served as an Aeronautical Engineer with he Fighter Project Engineering Section with the 6512th Test Group at Edwards AFB, California, from February 1960 to January 1962, and he then attended the Experimental Flight Test Pilot Course at Edwards AFB from January to August 1962. He served as an Instructor in the Performance Branch at the Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards AFB from August 1962 to May 1963, and then attended the Aerospace Research Pilot Course at Edwards AFB from May 1963 to January 1964. During this time he was selected in the 3rd Group of NASA Astronauts in October 1963, and he served as a NASA Astronaut from January 1964 until he was killed during a T-38 Talon aircraft accident near Ellington AFB, Texas, on October 31, 1964. Ted Freeman was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
