Ernest Borgnine was born on January 24, 1917, in Hamden, Connecticut. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on October 8, 1935, and completed basic training at Naval Training Station Newport, Rhode Island, in January 1936. Petty Officer Borgnine served as a Gunner's Mate and Gun Range Finder Operator aboard the auxiliary/destroyer minesweeper USS Lamberton (AG-21/DMS-2) from February 1936 until he left active duty on October 7, 1941. After the Pearl Harbor attack, Borgnine re-enlisted in the U.S. Navy at New Haven, Connecticut, on January 22, 1942, and then served as a Gunner's Mate aboard the patrol yacht USS Sylph (PY-12) patrolling for German submarines along the East Coast of the United States from January 1942 until he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy on September 14, 1945. After leaving active duty, Ernest Borgnine became an actor making films and television shows from 1947 until his death on July 8, 2012. During his acting career he won the 1955 Academy Award for Best Actor, the 1955 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, and the 2011 Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. He was given an honorary promotion to Chief Petty Officer by the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy in 2004. Ernest Borgnine was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, California.
