Harry Belafonte was born on March 1, 1927, in New York City. He worked as a clerk for the Central Post Office in New York City from December 1943 to February 1944, and he then enlisted in the U.S. Navy on April 1, 1944. Belafonte went on active duty beginning on April 12, 1944, and completed basic training at NTS Great Lakes, Illinois, in June 1944. He was trained as a Storekeeper at NTS Hampton, Virginia, from June to October 1944, followed by service as a Storekeeper at Receiving Station Shoemaker, California, and then at Receiving Station Brooklyn, New York. S2c Belafonte was honorably discharged from the Navy at Personnel Separation Center Lido Beach, Long Island, New York on December 3, 1945. After leaving active duty, Harry Belafonte became a singer and actor. He starred in 16 films between 1953 and 2018, and released 27 studio albums between 1954 and 1988. He is one of the few entertainers to have received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (EGOT). Harry Belafonte died on April 25, 2023, and chose to be cremated.
