Spiro Agnew was born on November 9, 1918, in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and then the University of Baltimore School of Law before enlisting in the U.S. Army on September 24, 1941. Pvt Agnew attended basic training and infantry training at Camp Croft, South Carolina, from September to December 1941, and was accepted for Officer Candidate School in January 1942. He began Armored Force Officer Candidate School at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in February 1942, and he was commissioned a 2d Lt of Infantry on May 23, 1942. Lt Agnew served as Maintenance Officer for the 78th Medical and then Platoon Leader with Company I, 49th Armored Infantry Regiment of the 8th Armored Division at Fort Knox, Kentucky, from May to October 1942. His next assignment was as Regimental Special Service Officer with the 49th Armored Regiment of the 8th Armored Division at Fort Knox and then at Camp Campbell, Kentucky, from October 1942 to March 1943, followed by service as Special Service Officer and then Commander of Company E, 480th Infantry Regiment of the 20th Armored Division at Camp Campbell from March to July 1943. Lt Agnew served as Company Commander, Assistant Regimental Special Service Officer, and then Pool Officer with Army Ground Forces Personnel Replacement Depot Number 1 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, from July 1943 to March 1944, and then as Company Commander and then Replacement Officer with the 107th Replacement Battalion, then the 19th Replacement Depot, and finally with the 53rd Replacement Battalion in Europe from April to December 1944. His next assignment was as Rifle Platoon Leader, Service Company Officer, and then Motor Officer with the 54th Armored Infantry Battalion of the 10th Armored Division in France and Germany from December 1944 to July 1945, followed by service as Assistant Special Services Officer with Headquarters, Camp Baltimore, France, from July to September 1945. He then served as Platoon Leader with Company B, 743rd Tank Battalion, on Occupation duties in Germany from September to November 1945. After returning to the United States, Lt Agnew was assigned to the Separation Center at Fort George G. Meade, and was honorably discharged and entered the U.S. Army Reserve on February 14, 1946. After leaving active duty, Agnew completed his law degree at the University of Baltimore School of Law in 1947, and worked as a lawyer until being recalled to active duty with the U.S. Army on October 11, 1950. Lt Agnew served as Company Commander with the Processing Company and then Company F, 1st Receiving Battalion, 2053rd Area Service Unit Reception Center at Fort George G. Meade, from October 1950 to March 1951, and he then attended refresher training at The Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, from March to May 1951. He was assigned to Headquarters, Second Army, at Fort George G. Meade for a short time before being honorably discharged from active duty and joining the U.S. Army Reserve on May 14, 1951. Lt Agnew was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army Reserve on April 1, 1953. After leaving active duty he returned to his law career, and served as 3rd Executive of Baltimore County, Maryland, from December 1962 to December 1966, and as the 55th Governor of the State of Maryland from January 25, 1967, to January 7, 1969. He was elected the 39th Vice President of the United States on November 5, 1968, and served from January 20, 1969, until he resigned from his position on October 10, 1973. Spiro Agnew died on September 17, 1996, and was buried at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium, Maryland.
