  Tribute:

Jimmy Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. He entered the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, in June 1943, and he graduated and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy on June 5, 1946. His class (the Class of 1947) graduated one year early because of an accelerated wartime program that reduced the program from 4 years to 3. His first assignment was as radar officer and CIC officer aboard the training ship USS Wyoming (AG-17, the former battleship BB-32) from June 1946 to July 1947, and then as Training and Education Officer aboard the training ship USS Mississippi (AG-128, the former battleship BB-41) from July 1947 to June 1948, both based at Naval Base Norfolk, Virgina. Carter next attended Submarine School at Submarine Base New London, Connecticut, from June to December 1948, and then served as Communications Officer, Sonar Officer, Electronics Officer, Gunnery Officer, and Supply Officer aboard the submarine USS Pomfret (SS-391) based at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, from December 1948 to February 1951. His next assignment was as Executive Officer, Engineering Officer, and Electronics Repair Officer aboard the submarine USS K-1 (SSK-1) from February 1951 to October 1952. This included precommissioning of the submarine from February to November 1951. LT Carter was selected for duty with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission under Admiral Hyman G. Rickover to create the first nuclear-powered submarines in October 1952, and he served with the Division of Reactor Development with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in Schenectady, New York, from November 1952 to March 1953, and he assisted in the design and development of nuclear propulsion plants for naval vessels with the Atomic Energy Commission in Washington, D.C., from March to October 1953. During this time, LT Carter's father became very sick and died on July 22, 1953. Carter left active duty on October 9, 1953, and transferred to the U.S. Navy Reserve. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy Reserve on December 7, 1961. Jimmy Carter was later elected to the Georgia State Senate and served from January 14, 1963, to January 9, 1967, and was elected the 76th Governor of Georgia, serving from January 12, 1971, to January 14, 1975. He was elected the 39th President of the United States in the 1976 Presidential Election, and served from January 20, 1977, to January 20, 1981. President Carter was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton in 1999, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. On October 1, 2024, President Carter became the first former President to live to 100 years old.
