John Waltz was born on March 31, 1943, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard on August 17, 1960, and completed recruit training at U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, New Jersey, in November 1960. He next completed Fireman training at Cape May in January 1961, and reported aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter McCulloch (Weather Reporting Ship WAVP-386) at Boston, Massachusetts, the same month. Fireman Waltz next served at the U.S. Coast Guard LORAN (Long Range Navigation System) Station at Talampulan, Republic of the Philippines, from April 1962 to January 1963, followed by service at Coast Guard Air Station Salem, Massachusetts, from January to November 1963. His final assignment was aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eastwind (Icebreaker WAGB-279) at Boston, Massachussetts, in November 1963, but he received a Hardship Discharge from the Coast Guard on November 4, 1963. John Waltz died on May 7, 2006, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
