Roger Towberman entered active duty in the U.S. Air Force in September 1990, and he graduated Basic Military Training as an Honor Graduate in October 1990. He attended the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey, California, from October 1990 to December 1991, and then went through additional training at Goodfellow AFB, Texas, from January to May 1992. His first assignment was as an RC-135 Systems Operator and Collection Manager at Wheeler Army Airfield, Hawaii, from May 1992 to March 1997, followed by service as a C2 Network Analyst at Kelly AFB, Texas, from March 1997 to March 1999. Sgt Towberman served as an RC-135 Superintendent for Standardization and Evaluations and as Flight Chief for Airborne Operations with the 488th Intelligence Squadron at RAF Mildenhall, England, from March 1999 to August 2007, and then as Operations Superintendent for the 338th Combat Training Squadron at Offutt AFB, Nebraska, from August 2007 to October 2009. He then returned to the 488th Intelligence Squadron at RAF Mildenhall, England, where he served as Operations Superintendent from October 2009 to July 2010, and then as Superintendent of the 488th Intelligence Squadron from July 2010 to August 2011. Chief Towberman served as Superintendent of the 55th Electronic Combat Group at Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona, from August 2011 to May 2013, and during this time he deployed to Afghanistan where he served as Superintendent of the 455th Expeditionary Operations Group from April to November 2012. His next assignment was as Command Chief Master Sergeant for the 480th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, from May 2013 to September 2014, followed by service as Command Chief Master Sergeant for 25th Air Force at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, from September 2014 to August 2017. He served as Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs at the Pentagon from August 2017 to November 2018, and then served as Command Chief of Air Force Space Command at Peterson AFB, Colorado, from November 2018 to December 2019. During this time he became Command Senior Enlisted Leader for U.S. Space Command at Peterson AFB in August 2019, and he became the first Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force at Peterson AFB (and then at the Pentagon) on April 3, 2020, which also made him the 2nd person to join the Space Force and the 1st enlisted person to join. He retired from the U.S. Space Force on October 1, 2023. Chief Master Sergeant Towberman has 4,574 flying hours in the RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft, and 3,748 of those were combat/combat support hours. He wears Master Enlisted Aircrew Wings. Chief Towberman attended Pacific Air Forces Airman Leadership School at Hickam AFB, Hawaii, in 1995; the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Non-Commissioned Officer Academy at Kapaun AB, Germany, in 2002; the Joint Advanced Tactical Signals Intelligence Training Program, Naval Strike, at the Air Warfare Center in Fallon, Nevada, in 2002; the U.S. Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, in 2006; and the U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Leadership Course at Maxwell AFB in 2009.
