Bill Schroeder was born in 1977, and graduated from Vermillion High School in Vermillion, South Dakota, in 1995. He was commissioned a 2d Lt in the U.S. Air Force through the Air Force ROTC program at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, in 1999, and then completed Combat Weather Team training. Lt Schroeder's first assignment was as Director of the 101st Division Combat Weather Operations of the 19th Air Support Operation Squadron at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, from July 1999 to May 2002, followed by service as Officer in Charge of the 3rd Special Forces Group Weather Team, Detachment 5, of the 10th Combat Weather Squadron at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, from May 2002 to May 2003. Captain Schroeder commanded Detachment 5 of the 10th Combat Weather Squadron on Fort Bragg from May 2003 to August 2005, and then served as Chief of the Special Operations Forces Weather Operations Center with the Air Force Weather Agency at Offutt AFB, Nebraska, from August 2005 to August 2007. His next assignment was as a Meteorologic/Oceanographic Officer with Special Operations Command Europe in Stuttgart, Germany, from August 2007 to May 2010, followed by an assignment to complete his Masters Degree at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, from June 2010 to December 2011. Lt Col Schroeder served as a Strategic Communication Fellow at the Pentagon from January 2012 to May 2013, and then as Commander of the 10th Combat Weather Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Florida, from June 2013 to May 2014. His final assignment was as Commander of the 342d Training Squadron at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, from June 2014 until he was killed on active duty at the base on April 8, 2016. Lt Col Schroeder was posthumously awarded the Airman's Medal, and he will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
