Ed Broadhurst was born on August 16, 1915, in Smithfield, North Carolina. He attended The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1932 to 1933, and then entered the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on July 1, 1933. Broadhurst was commissioned a 2d Lt of Field Artillery on June 12, 1937, and then attended Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, from September 1937 to February 1938. Lt Broadhurst next attended the Air Corps Primary and Advanced Flying Schools at Randolph and Kelly Fields, Texas, from March 1938 to February 1939, followed by service as a B-10 Bolo pilot, Adjutant, and Assistant Operations Officer for the 32nd Bomb Squadron at March Field, California, from February 1939 to February 1941. He served as a B-17 Flying Fortress pilot and as Operations Officer with the 19th Bomb Group at March Field from February to June 1941, and then at Albuquerque Field, New Mexico, from June to September 1941. Capt Broadhurst deployed with the 19th Bomb Group to Clark Field in the Philippines in October 1941, and was present at the time of the Japanese Attack on the Philippines in December 1941. He escaped capture with other members of his unit, and then served as Executive Officer of the 19th Bomb Group in Java and Australia from January to March 1942. Lt Col Broadhurst served as a Plans Officer at Allied Headquarters for the Southwest Pacific Area in Australia from March to August 1942, and then as Chief of the Command and Staff Training School at Fort George Wright, Washington, from September 1942 to January 1943. He served as Assistant Chief of Staff, A-3, with Headquarters 2nd Air Force at Colorado Springs, Colorado, from January 1943 to January 1944, followed by service as a member of the Asiatic Section, Theater Group Operations Division, with the War Department General Staff in Washington, D.C., from January 1944 to April 1946. Col Broadhurst served as Assistant Executive Officer in the Office of the Secretary of War in the Pentagon from April 1946 to April 1947, and then as Chief of the U.S. Military Aviation Mission to Chile in Santiago from April 1947 to May 1950. His next assignment was as Chief of the Plans Division with Headquarters Strategic Air Command at Offutt AFB, Nebraska, from August 1950 to September 1953, followed by service as Commander of the 5th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Travis AFB, California, from October 1953 to January 1955. Major General Broadhurst served as Commander of the 57th Air Division at Fairchild AFB, Washington, from January 1955 to September 1956, and then as Inspector General of Strategic Air Command at Offutt AFB from September 1956 to December 1957. He served as Chief of Staff of Strategic Air Command at Offutt from December 1957 to July 1961, and then as Commander of the 7th Air Division at RAF High Wycombe, England, from August 1961 to October 1962. His next assignment was as Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations at Headquarters U.S. Air Force in the Pentagon from October 1962 to January 1963, followed by service as Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Programs and Requirements at Headquarters U.S. Air Force from February to June 1963. Lieutenant General Broadhurst's final assignment was as Chief of Staff, United Nations Command, U.S. Forces Korea, in Seoul, South Korea, from June 1963 until his death on active duty on April 4, 1965. At the time of his promotion to Lieutenant General on August 1, 1963, he was the youngest Lieutenant General on active duty in the Air Force, and the highest ranking person from North Carolina on active duty. Ed Broadhurst married the former Viola Seubert in Washington, D.C., on March 11, 1944, and they had three children; Edwin Borden, Mary Ann, and Barbara Ellen. He was buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Smithfield, North Carolina.
