Paul Kelly was born on October 14, 1957, in Morristown, New Jersey. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 4, 1975, and completed basic training at NTC Orlando, Florida, in January 1976. Kelly attended Hull Technician A School at Naval Support Activity Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from January to March 1976, and then additional training at NTC San Diego, California, from March to May 1976. He attended Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training with Class 090 at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, California, from June 1976 to January 1977, followed by Basic Airborne School in March 1977. His first assignment was with SEAL Team TWO at NAB Little Creek, Virginia, from March 1977 until he was killed in a parachute training accident at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on September 16, 1980. During this time, Petty Officer Third Class Kelly served with the Navy Parachute Team (East) "Chuting Stars". Paul Kelly was buried at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, New Jersey. He was survived by his proud son, Paul P. Kelly, Jr., who was born after his father's death.
