Charles Dusing was born on April 11, 1928, in Wilmont, South Dakota. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 14, 1946, and served as a refrigeration specialist until leaving active duty on June 9, 1949. Dusing next enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on August 4, 1950, and served as a refrigeration specialist with the 4915th Installations Squadron at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico, from September 1950 to December 1952. His next assignment was as a refrigeration specialist with the 4935th Air Base Squadron at Indian Springs AFB, Nevada, from December 1952 to July 1954, followed by service with the 4901st Support Wing at Kirtland AFB from July 1954 until he left active duty on August 6, 1954. Sgt Dusing reenlisted with the Air Force on October 29, 1954, and then served as a refrigeration specialist with the 28th Installations Squadron at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota, from October 1954 to April 1955. His next assignment was as a refrigeration specialist with the 3926th Air Base Squadron at Nouasseur AB, French Morocco, from May 1955 to June 1956, followed by service with the 28th Motor Vehicle Squadron and then the 28th Installations Squadron back at Ellsworth AFB from July 1956 to April 1960. Sgt Dusing then served as a refrigeration supervisor with the 6937th Communications Group in Peshawar, Pakistan, from May 1960 to May 1961, and then as a refrigeration and air conditioning specialist with the 1608th Civil Engineer Squadron at Charleston AFB, South Carolina, from May 1961 to October 1965. SSgt Dusing then deployed to Southeast Asia, where he served as a refrigeration specialist with the 6250th Support Squadron at Tan Son Nhut AB, South Vietnam, from early October 1965 until he was captured and taken as a Prisoner of War on October 31, 1965. On November 2, 1965, Sgt Dusing attempted to escape from his captors but was recaptured and executed on December 31, 1965. He was officially listed as Missing in Action until declared dead on May 17, 1974. He was promoted through the ranks to Chief Master Sergeant during the time he was listed as missing, and his remains have never been returned to the United States.
