Richard Norton was born on October 21, 1932, in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve on August 7, 1954, and was commissioned upon graduating from Medical School at the University of Pennsylvania on August 7, 1959. His first assignment was as a Medical Officer aboard the repair ship USS Luzon (ARG-2) from September 1959 to April 1960, followed by service as a Medical Officer aboard the repair ship USS Ajax (AR-6) from April to September 1960. LT Norton performed his Residency in Anesthesiology at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, California, from October 1960 to October 1962, and then served as an Anesthesiologist at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from October 1962 to September 1964. He then performed his Residency in Pediatric Anesthesiology at Los Angeles Children's Hospital from October 1964 to September 1965. CDR Norton's next assignment was as an Anesthesiologist at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego from September 1965 to June 1967, followed by service as Chief of Anesthesiology at the U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Albans, New York, from July 1967 to July 1970. He served as an Anesthesiologist and then Chief of Anesthesiology at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Philadelphia from August 1970 to August 1974. CAPT Norton's final assignment was as Chief of Anesthesiology at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, from September 1974 until his retirement from the Navy on November 1, 1981. During his career, he served as special consultant to the Surgeon General, adjunct professor at George Washington University, and was President of the Society for Military Anesthesiologists in 1981. Richard Norton died on November 20, 2011, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
