Calvin Graham was born on April 3, 1930, in Canton, Texas. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 12 on September 17, 1942, by lying about his age. S1 Graham served on the gun crew aboard the battleship USS South Dakota (BB-57) from September 1942 to January 1943, having participated in the Battle of Santa Cruz in October 1942, and Guadalcanal in November 1942 before his true age was discovered. He was discharged from the Navy on April 5, 1943, and later enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1948, serving until he was honorably discharged after being injured on active duty in 1951. Calvin Graham died on November 6, 1992, and was buried at Laurel Land Memorial Park in Fort Worth, Texas.
