William Henry Harrison was born on February 9, 1773, in Charles City County, Virginia. He was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Army's 11th U.S. Regiment of Infantry in 1791, and participated in the Northwest Indian War between 1792 and 1797, including the Siege of Fort Recovery and the Battle of Fallen Timbers. After resigning from the Army in 1797, Harrison served as the 2nd Secretary of the Northwest Territory from June 1798 to October 1799, was a Delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Northwest Territory from March 1799 to May 1800, served as the 1st Governor of the Indiana Territory from January 1801 to September 1812, and served as 1st Governor of the District of Louisiana from October 1804 to July 1805. During his time as Governor of the Indiana Territory, he was authorized by the Secretary of War to march against the Shawnee Indians in 1811, which became the Battle of Tippecanoe, a victory for the United States. Harrison remained in command of the Army in Indiana, and after the War of 1812 broke out, he was promoted to Major General and given command of the Army of the Northwest on September 17, 1812. Gen Harrison fought during the Siege of Fort Wayne and the Battle of the Thames before resigning from the Army during the summer of 1814. After the war, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio's 1st District, serving from October 8, 1816, to March 3, 1819, and later was elected to the U.S. Senate from Ohio, serving from March 4, 1825, to May 20, 1828. Harrison served as U.S. Ambassador to Colombia from May 24, 1828, to September 26, 1829, and was elected President of the United States in 1840. William Henry Harrison served the shortest Presidential term in U.S. History, from March 4, 1841, until his death on April 4, 1841. He is buried at the William Henry Harrison Memorial in North Bend, Ohio. The city of Harrison, New Jersey, was named in his honor, as were 4 state counties: Harrison County, Mississippi; Harrison County Indiana; Harrison County, Iowa; and Harrison County, Ohio.
