Ruby Bradley was born on December 19, 1907, in Spencer, West Virginia. She was commissioned a 2d Lt in the Army Nurse Corps on October 16, 1934, and served as a surgical nurse at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C., from October 1934 to November 1939. Lt Bradley then deployed to the Philippines, serving as a nurse at Fort Mills on Corregidor from February 1940 to February 1941, and then at Camp John Hay in Baguio City from February 1941 until she was captured by Japanese forces and taken as a Prisoner of War on December 29, 1941. After spending 1,133 days in captivity, she was released on February 3, 1945, when the POW camp she was being held at on Manila was liberated by American forces. After recuperation leave, Capt Bradley served as Assistant Chief Nurse at Fort Meyer and McGuire General Hospital, Virginia, from July 1945 to February 1946, and as Chief Nurse at Fort Eustis, Virginia, from March to September 1946. After attending the University of California at Los Angeles for additional nursing education, she served at Letterman General Hospital, California, from August 1947 to February 1949, followed by service at Walter Reed General Hospital and with the Joint Long Range Proving Ground from February 1949 to July 1950. Maj Bradley next served as Chief Nurse for the 171st Evacuation Hospital at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and then deployed to Japan and Korea from July 1950 to July 1951, followed by service as Chief Nurse with Headquarters 8th Army in Korea from July 1951 to June 1953. Col Bradley served as Chief of the Nursing Division with Headquarters 3rd Army at Fort McPherson, Georgia, from August 1953 to June 1958, and then as Chief Nurse with Headquarters U.S. Army Europe in Heidelberg, West Germany, from July 1958 to April 1961. Her final assignment was as Director of Nursing Activities at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas, from June 1961 until her retirement from the Army on April 1, 1963. After her retirement from the Army, Ruby worked as a supervisor for a private-duty nursing service in Roane County, West Virginia, from 1963 to 1980. Ruby Bradley died on May 28, 2002, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
