Operation Red Wings

On this page you will find listings for the 11 Navy SEALs and 8 Night Stalkers (members of the U.S. Army's 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment) that were Killed in Action during Operation Red Wings in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, on 28 June 2005. Three SEALs were killed on the ground (Murphy, Axelson, and Dietz), and the other eight were killed when the MH-47 Chinook that was coming in to aid the ground team was shot down by an enemy RPG. The eight crew members of the MH-47 were also killed when the helicopter broke apart and crashed down the side of a mountain.
